Pegatron licenses Microsoft's patent portfolio for Android and Chrome devices

Pegatron licenses Microsoft's patent portfolio for Android and Chrome devices

Microsoft may make a ton of money by selling Xboxes, operating systems, and other software to consumers , but it also pads its bottom line by monetizing its IP. Its newest patent profits will be coming from Pegatron Corp. -- a Taiwanese ODM that makes parts for a plethora of others, including Apple, ASUS and HP -- as the two companies have entered into a licensing agreement for devices running Android and Chrome OS. The agreement covers e-readers, smartphones and tablets, with Pegatron paying Redmond royalties of unknown amount. So, the Ballmer licensing bandwagon continues unabated, but we just hope all this new-found cash will be put to use creating fantastic new products instead of funding more courtroom conflicts.

The Band's Levon Helm Dead At 71

Famed drummer passed away 'surrounded by family, friends and band mates' on Thursday.

After fighting a long battle with cancer, Levon Helm, former drummer for Rock and Roll Hall of Fame group The Band died Thursday (April 19). He was 71.

"Levon Helm passed peacefully this afternoon," a statement on his website reads. "He was surrounded by family, friends and band mates and will be remembered by all he touched as a brilliant musician and a beautiful soul."

Born in Elaine, Arkansas, on May 26, 1940, Helm's signature Southern drawl is featured on some of the Band's most iconic songs, from "The Weight" and "Up on Cripple Creek" to "The Night They Drove Old Dixie Down."

Helm was first diagnosed with throat cancer in 1998 and has struggled with his voice since. He initially lost his ability to sing entirely, but continued to play drums, mandolin and harmonica. Radiation left him with little more than a raspy whisper, but Helm continued to try to sing, and by the time he recorded 2007's Dirt Farmer he'd recovered 80 percent of his voice.

With his daughter Amy, he started a series of weekly concerts at his Woodstock, New York, studios called the "Midnight Ramble," which grew from an idea Helm explained to Martin Scorsese while making "The Last Waltz," the legendary documentary directed by Scorsese about the Band's epic, all-star Thanksgiving farewell concert in 1976 at the Winterland Ballroom in San Francisco.

The Midnight Ramble shows became very popular and attracted many of music's most renowned stars, from Elvis Costello and Norah Jones to My Morning Jacket and Emmylou Harris. The shows' success reignited Helm's recording career in the early 2000s, leading him toward Grammy wins for his albums Dirt Farmer (2007), Electric Dirt (2009) and Ramble at the Ryman (2011).

Helm's music career began when he joined the band of rocker Ronnie Hawkins in 1957. During his stint in Hawkins' band, he met Richard Manuel, Rick Danko, Robbie Robertson and Garth Hudson and together they formed the core of the Band. After their split from Hawkins, the group became the backing band for Bob Dylan as the folk icon transitioned to an electric sound.

Helm, Manuel, Danko, Robertson and Hudson eventually earned a recording contract of their own, and as the Band released 10 studio albums, beginning with 1968's Music From Big Pink. Though the Band broke up in 1976, they regrouped without Robertson in 1983 and continued recording through 1998.

Helm was also an actor, appearing in 12 films, most notably the 1980s Oscar-winning "Coal Miner's Daughter," in which he played Loretta Lynn's (Sissy Spacek) father, and most recently the Mark Wahlberg-starring "Shooter."

Prince of Persia source code freed from floppies, posted online

You wouldn't think it would take more than two weeks to extract some source code from a pile of 3.5-inch floppies and post it online, but getting files from 1989 to play nice with a MacBook Air is no simple feat. That's why we're so appreciative of Jordan Mechner, who put the time and effort into freeing his creation, Prince of Persia, from its magnetic prison. If you want to try and build the platforming classic for your own system, hit up the source link. Or, just wait for someone else to do it for you -- we're sure it wont take long for some friendly binary formats to hit the web.

Rihanna Unveils 'Where Have You Been' Video Set Photo

Singer posts picture on Facebook with message to fans: 'The countdown to 'Where Have You Been' is on.'
By Jocelyn Vena

The pieces of Rihanna's "Where Have You Been" music video puzzle are coming together, one photo at a time.

In a new black-and-white pic posted Monday on her Facebook page, the singer kneels in a landscape of tree branches and cascading flowers. Next to her is a white fur throw. Clad in a mesh bikini top and a metallic skirt, Rihanna is wearing her hair down and sporting big bangles.

In March, Rihanna was snapped on the set of the video. In a candid picture posted online, the singer is looking down, her hair is done up in a messy way and she's sporting no top, but is wearing lots of clunky bracelets. About the video, she teased, "Video shoot goin MAJAH!"

Weeks later, she dropped the single art for the song. In it, Rihanna covers most of her face with a leopard-print scarf. All fans see of her is her eye, all dolled up with heavy, smoky eye makeup.

"Where Have You Been" will be the third video released from Talk That Talk, following the footsteps of the quirky "You Da One" clip and the cinematic "We Found Love." This is also her second single produced and written by Calvin Harris, who also worked with her on "WFL." The song's production also gets an assist from Dr. Luke and Ester Dean, among others.

While she has yet to announce a release date for the video, she did offer a bit of insight into when it might drop, writing on Facebook, "The countdown to 'Where Have You Been' is on."

Are you awaiting Rihanna's new video? Tell us below!

Mechanical tissue resuscitation technology shows promise preventing cell death

ScienceDaily (Apr. 16, 2012) ? Wake Forest Baptist Medical Center researchers seeking a successful treatment for traumatic brain injury have found that the size and extent of damaged tissue can be reduced by using a new device to prevent cell death.

The research, the focus of a three-year, $1.5 million study funded by the Department of Defense, was recently published in the journal Neurosurgery. The technology, tested in rats, is called mechanical tissue resuscitation (MTR) and uses negative pressure to create an environment that fosters cell survival.

Louis C. Argenta, M.D., and Michael Morykwas, Ph.D., professors in the Department of Plastic Surgery and Reconstructive Surgery, and a multidisciplinary team of colleagues at Wake Forest Baptist, have more than 15 years of experience working with negative pressure devices to successfully treat wounds and burns. In this study, the team used MTR to remove fluid and other toxins that cause cell death from an injury site deep in the brain.

When the brain is injured by blunt force, explosion or other trauma, the cells at the impact site are irreversibly damaged and die. In the area surrounding the wound, injured cells release toxic substances that cause the brain to swell and restrict blood flow and oxygen levels. This process results in more extensive cell death which affects brain function. Argenta and his team targeted these injured brain cells to determine if removing the fluid and toxic substances that lead to cell death could help improve survival of the damaged cells.

In the study, a bioengineered material matrix was placed directly on the injured area in the brain and attached to a flexible tube connected to a microcomputer vacuum pump. The pump delivered a carefully controlled vacuum to the injured brain for 72 hours drawing fluid from the injury site.

The brain injuries treated with the device showed a significant decrease in brain swelling and release of toxic substances when compared to untreated injuries. Brains treated with the device showed that over 50% more brain tissue could be preserved compared to nontreated animals. Behavioral function tests demonstrated that function was returned faster in the MTR treated group.

"We have been very gratified by the results thus far. This study demonstrates that by working together a multidisciplinary group of researchers can develop new technology that could be used one day at the hospital bedside," said Argenta.

The researchers are now studying the same technology in stroke and brain hemorrhage models.

"The Department of Defense has identified this as an area that is ripe for medical advancement," said study co-author Stephen B. Tatter, MD, Ph.D., professor of neurosurgery at Wake Forest Baptist Medical Center. "We believe it will soon be ready for a clinical trial."

Co-authors on this study are Zhenlin Zheng, Ph.D., and Allyson Bryant, M.D., Department of Plastic Surgery and Reconstructive Surgery.

Man Candy Mondays: William Levy

Man Candy Monday: Adam Brody

Why we love him

Modeling, dancing, acting: William can do it all... and oh so well. Plus, we feel like we're catching him on the way up ? hooray for fresh meat!

William Levy

Born:?Aug. 29,?1980

Hometown: Havana, Cuba

Height: 6'

He's a self-made man from humble beginnings

Born with a silver spoon? No way! William's life had tough beginnings: He grew up poor in Cuba, eventually immigrating to Miami as a teen, and paved his own way to stardom via modeling, Telemundo reality shows and Mexican telenovelas.

"I could not teach someone like me. [Dancing is] harder than any sport."

It wasn't until just this year, when he was cast in Dancing with the Stars as partner to Cheryl Burke (they dubbed themselves "Team Fuego!"), that he became famous among U.S. TV viewers ? but he says the show is as much work as it is fun: "I could not teach someone like me," he told Extra. "[Dancing is] harder than any sport.??

But you make it look so easy, William!

William Levy in Dancing with the Stars

He's a triple threat: cute, chiseled and charming

That bod! That face! Both People and People en Espa?ol?(among many other mags) have featured him on their cover, and he frolicked on the beach with Jennifer Lopez herself in her recent "I'm Into You" video.

If J.Lo approves, you know he's sexy! But believe it or not, Levy was scared to show off his chest during his shirt-ripping salsa routine on DWTS:

"I don't want people to have the feeling that I just want to show my body!" he told Us Weekly. "I am here to dance and have fun, not about, 'Oh, I'm hot and I'm in shape.' You know? Sometimes it's more than that!"

We like every aspect of his TV appearances!

He's a rising star

We love it when it seems like a hot guy drops from the sky. Even though he's been working on TV for years, William has just recently shot to fame in the U.S. ? which makes him all mysterious... and all the more delicious. What does he have to say about his new U.S. fans?

"To come to this country and receive this kind of love from people you don't even know, it's amazing," he told People.

"To come to this country and receive this kind of love from people you don't even know, it's amazing."

William Levy's relationship status:

Thanks to their off-the-charts chemistry, rumors flew that William was involved with his dancing partner, Cheryl Burke, on DWTS, but he quickly put those to rest, telling Access Hollywood, "She?s a great woman. She?s a great girl ? anyone would like to go out with her. But here, we?re dancing. We?re just dancing right now.?

"I try to give my kids everything I never had."

As for his real relationships, he has dated fellow telenovela star Elizabeth Gutierrez, the mother of his 6-year-old son and?2-year-old daughter, on and off for eight years. Despite their rocky relationship, he says his lean early years inform his parenting now: "I try to give my kids everything I never had," he told People.

We're suckers for a family man!

Report: HP's South Korean offices raided over alleged price fixing

Image

Korea Times is a publication that isn't shy of the odd bold statement and today it's claiming that HP's South Korean offices were raided on suspicion of price-fixing deals made with IBM and Oracle. The country's Fair Trade Commission seized documents, computer records and questioned employees over alleged price-rigging on public-sector contracts. A company spokesperson said that the visit was routine, while FTC officers refused to comment about ongoing matters, but what is clear is that if any wrong-doing is found, the case will be turned over to prosecutors with the aim of commencing criminal proceedings for those responsible.
