Qualcomm confirms its role in LG superphone with quad-core Snapdragon S4

There's nothing like jumping the gun to announce your involvement with a phone that technically doesn't exist, but we've gotta say, we love Qualcomm for doing it. The company has just revealed to us its role in the production of a smartphone from LG that'll feature quad-core Snapdragon S4 internals, and if it performs anything like recent benchmarks suggest, you'd best hold onto your hats. For a little backstory, rumors are currently circulating that LG is producing a smartphone of epic proportions that's known as the Optimus G, which is said to wield a quad-core processor, a 4.7-inch IPS True HD display, 2GB of RAM and a 13-megapixel camera. Whether it's related to this announcement is anyone's guess, but you'll be forgiven for salivating at the prospect. Fortunately, you won't have long to find out the true home of the quad-core Snapdragon S4, as Qualcomm has also revealed that LG plans to release its next superphone for commercial availability this September in South Korea, with other territories to follow.

'Bad manners' or rape? Assange ally sparks storm

LONDON -- As U.S. Congressman Todd Akin fights for his political life over his "legitimate rape" comments, a high-profile British politician has ignited a storm on the other side of the Atlantic over the definition of rape.

George Galloway, a member of the U.K. parliament and former leader of the left-wing Respect Party, waded into the debate around the allegations faced by WikiLeaks founder Julian Assange.

During a 31-minute podcast, Galloway discussed the claims made by two Swedish woman against Assange in graphic detail, claiming that his alleged behavior was at worst "bad manners" but "not rape."

The colorful Galloway -- who has been dubbed "Gorgeous George" by some U.K. tabloids ?--?is no stranger to controversy. He?grabbed headlines around the world after he shook hands with Iraqi dictator Saddam Hussein in 1994 and praised him for his "strength, courage and indefatigability." He also appeared as a contestant on "Celebrity Big Brother" -- where he famously pretended to be a cat.

This week's "Goodnight with George Galloway" video podcast put him back in the spotlight.????

"Some people believe that when you go to bed with somebody, take off your clothes, and have sex with them and then fall asleep, you're already in the sex game with them," Galloway said, gesticulating emphatically. "It might be really bad manners not to have tapped her on the shoulder and said: 'Do you mind if I do it again?' It might be really sordid and bad sexual etiquette, but whatever else it is, it is not rape or you bankrupt the term rape of all meaning."

Cue gasps all around.

May 17, 2005: British lawmaker George Galloway rejects a Senate subcommittee's claim that Saddam Hussein awarded him lucrative allocations under the U.N. oil-for-food program.

His comments provoked a furious response on Twitter and were blasted by women's groups and newspaper columnists.

Writing in the Daily Telegraph, British broadcaster and journalist Christina Odone said that Galloway "should be punished at the ballot box" for his views. "When it comes to rape, misogyny is rife in politics," she added.

Scotsman columnist Emma Cowing wrote?that Galloway's comments were "about men redefining serious crimes against women to suit a political agenda."

"Rape victims have a history of being ignored and accused of lying," she added. "They have a history of feeling terrified of speaking out in case they are not believed, or are ridiculed, or have to face their attacker and relive the crime. This is why so many rape victims never report their crimes and why so many find it difficult to speak out in court."

Telegraph assistant comment editor Tom Chivers wrote?that "the situation Galloway has just described is absolutely, 100 per cent, no-ifs-or-buts definitely rape."

He added: "Listen, George: it is possible to think that WikiLeaks have done some good things without believing that Assange can do no wrong, or that all attempts to make him face trial are some sort of grand conspiracy."

From the Ecuadorian embassy in London, Julian Assange asked the U.S. to "renounce its witch hunt against WikiLeaks." NBC's Duncan Golestani reports.

Galloway is not the first British politician to get himself into hot water over the issue of rape.

A year ago, U.K.?Justice Secretary Kenneth Clarke kicked off a similar controversy when he differentiated date rape from "serious rape." ?Calls for his resignation came in fast, but the storm settled after he clarified the comments.

'Both have acted like fools'
It remains to be seen if the same will be true in the U.S. for Rep. Todd Akin.?

Missouri Senate candidate Todd Akin, who launched a firestorm of controversy after his use of the phrase "legitimate rape" and then ignited further criticism with his comments Tuesday, has said he's going to stay in the race. NBC's Andrea Mitchell reports.

An editorial in the left-leaning Guardian newspaper compared Akin and Galloway.?"They have three things in common. Both are men. Both encourage rape?deniers. And both have acted like fools."

The messages about rape from the highest echelons of political life come just after the 20th anniversary of legislation that made marital rape in the U.K. a crime.?

Victoria Derbyshire, the British radio host who took Clarke to task on his views a year ago made one point that resonates as the debate rages on both sides of the Atlantic this week.

"With respect," she told him in a flat tone, "rape is rape."

On Tuesday, the 58-year-old?Galloway sought to clarify his comments and released a statement.

"No never means yes and non-consensual sex is rape. There's no doubt about it and that has always been my position," he said.

"Julian Assange, let's be clear, has always denied the allegations. And this has all the hallmarks of a set-up. I don't believe, from what we know, that the Director of Public Prosecutions would sanction a prosecution in Britain. What occurred is not rape as most people understand it."

Christian group to hold conference on Pakistan blasphemy law

GENEVA (Reuters) - An influential Christian Church organization will hold an international conference in Geneva next month on Pakistan's blasphemy law, after an 11-year-old Pakistani Christian was detained on accusations of defaming Islam.

Religious and secular groups worldwide have protested over the arrest last week of Rifta Masih, accused by Muslim neighbors of burning verses from the Koran, Islam's holy book.

The World Council of Churches (WCC) said the conference was intended to give a global platform to religious minorities in Pakistan "who are victimized in the name of its controversial blasphemy law" in cases which had brought death penalties and "mob-instigated violence".

It will be addressed by representatives of the minorities: Hindus, Buddhists, Christians, dissenting Islamic sects - including Ahmadis and Shias, and by civil society groups defending them.

The WCC said officials from the United Nations, where special human rights investigators on religious freedom have often criticized Pakistan's blasphemy law, would also attend. But Pakistani diplomats in Geneva have not been invited.

The conference, from September 17-19, will be held during a sitting of the U.N. Human Rights Council where Pakistan, as spokesman for the 57-nation Organisation of Islamic Cooperation, regularly complains that Muslims are persecuted in the West.

"The public hearing aims to heighten discussions at international levels on the deteriorating situation of the human rights of minorities in Pakistan and the misuse of the blasphemy law," said WCC official Mathews George Chunakara.

The WCC, which links 349 Protestant and Orthodox Church bodies representing more than 560 million Christians in some 110 countries, said the gathering had been planned for some time and was not directly connected to Rifta Masih's case.

She was detained last week in Islamabad after mobs surrounded a police station where she was in protective custody.

The incident was followed by the forced exodus of several hundred Christians from the poverty-stricken suburb of the Pakistani capital after local mosques reported what the girl was alleged to have done over their loudspeakers.

"This is just the latest in a series of similar incidents going back many years. Some cases are reported but many go unreported," said George, who heads the WCC's commission on international affairs.

Pakistan's President Asif Al Zardari has called on officials for a report on the girl's arrest, which has brought protests from Amnesty International, British-based Christian group Barnabas Fund, and the global humanist body IHEU, among others.

"This latest affair just highlights the total hypocrisy of Pakistan, and its supporters, in the Human Rights Council," said Roy Brown, chief representative at the U.N. in Geneva of the IHEU, the International Humanist and Ethical Union.

Bachelor Pad Recap: Score One For Blakeley Jones, Hooters

Bachelor Pad. The only network show where working at Hooters for 25 years can provide you with the kind of training you need to excel.

Actually, who knows if that's even true, but it certainly benefited former Hooters waitress / Ben Flajnik castoff Blakeley Jones in her efforts.

Blakeley, age 34, hasn't actually worked there for 25 years, but people said that more than once, making for some memorable quotes.

How did it help her and who got the boot at the end of the night? Did Chris Bukowski survive? Find out in THG's Bachelor Pad recap!

After his botched plan to give Blakeley the boot, Chris and Sarah are cuddling and calling it "their last week in the house." Self-awareness at least. Plus 9.

Kalon took lady love Lindzi Cox out on a date (they love each other), while Chris masterminded a plan to boot Lindzi out of the house as revenge. Plus 4.

Tony gave a rose to Jaclyn Swartz ... after Ed Swiderski informed the group that he wasn't romantically interested in anybody there. Ouch. Minus 8.

Then there's a twist: Everyone must vote off a woman, who thens get to pick the man of her choice to leave with her. Chris could have an out after all!

Reigning Bachelor Pad champion Michael Stagliano spearheads a plan to get Erica Rose voted off, then make her think Chris was behind it. Plus 10.

The problem? Chris filled her in on what was going down, and she turned the tables on Michael, sending him home with a blistering tirade. Plus 20.

"The smartest thing that Holly ever did was dumping you and marrying Blake... and I'm so happy I'm taking you away with me," Erica snapped.

Okay that was just mean. Minus 25.

Man City recovers to open title defense with win

LONDON (AP) -Manchester City fought back after a second-half collapse against Southampton to open its title defense with a 3-2 victory against the Premier League newcomers on Sunday.

Substitutes Rickie Lambert and Steven Davis put a dogged Southampton side 2-1 in front and wipe out Carlos Tevez's opener for City.

But Samir Nasri spared City from an opening weekend upset by scoring an 80th-minute winner following Edin Dzeko's equalizer.

"We showed great character," Nasri told Sky Sports television. "We didn't panic."

Chelsea had no such troubles overcoming Wigan in Sunday's other match.

New signing Eden Hazard made an immediate impact, setting up Branislav Ivanovic's opener and winning the penalty from which Frank Lampard converted to clinch a 2-0 victory.

For City, the new season picked up where the last one ended for pulsating drama at Etihad Stadium. A 3-2 victory in May against Queens Park Rangers - secured in the final seconds - ended City's 44-year title drought.

"It was like the last game of the season, we've started the same and I hope at the end it will be the same result for us," Nasri said.

Although City didn't leave it until stoppage time on Sunday to produce the winner, manager Roberto Mancini hopes every game won't be as tough.

"It is important to have this character, it is better the next time to close the game," Mancini said. "We had too many chances to close the game - we didn't."

City had to cope without Sergio Aguero from the 14th minute after last season's top scorer fell awkwardly following Nathaniel Clyne's challenge. The Argentina striker went to hospital for a scan on his injured knee, but the results won't be known for another two days.

City's fortunes didn't improve after Aguero's injury. Even though Tevez won a penalty two minutes later, after falling to the ground under Jos Hooiveld's challenge, David Silva's tame spot kick was easily saved by Kelvin Davis.

Tevez found the target five minutes before halftime. He was fed through by Nasri and sneaked in front of Joe Fonte before sending the ball into the net at Davis' near post.

City squandered chances to extend its lead after the break, with Gael Clichy sweeping the ball over, and David Silva hitting the crossbar.

City was made to pay for those misses when Lambert, last season's top scorer in the second tier, scored his first topflight goal.

Four minutes after coming off the bench, Lambert seized on confusion in the City defense and Joleon Lescott's missed clearance to side-foot the ball past goalkeeper Joe Hart.

Another substitute also quickly delivered. Steven Davis had been on the pitch only three minutes when he buried the ball into the bottom corner of the net in the 68th after City debutant Jack Rodwell had lost possession to Southampton inside his own half.

But City recovered from its sloppiness, with Dzeko blasting in the equalizer four minutes later.

Nasri secured the three points after Southampton left back Danny Fox inadvertently headed the ball to the France midfielder, who was booked for lifting his jersey in the goal celebration to reveal a t-shirt with the "`Eid Mubarak" greeting to mark the end of Ramadan.

"We deserved to win the game," Mancini said. "They didn't have any chances in the first half and we had four or five incredible chances."

Chelsea made a surging start at Wigan following its tepid league campaign last year in which it finished sixth but made amends by winning the Champions League and FA Cup.

Roberto Di Matteo's side was in front after just two minutes, with Hazard turning Ivan Ramis and slipping the ball through for Ivanovic to race onto and dispatch into the Wigan net.

"(Hazard) was brilliant," Chelsea midfielder Frank Lampard said. "It's a young age to come into the Premier League, no matter how good of a player you are."

Ramis was struggling to cope with Hazard and gave away a penalty when he fouled the Belgium international just five minutes after Ivanovic's opener.

Lampard scored from the spot, but the Blues couldn't build on the margin of the victory as Wigan finished with nothing to show for its domination.

"They took their chances really well, they punished us massively," Wigan manager Roberto Martinez said. "It couldn't have been a harder test ... I thought Chelsea were happy to defend well and run the clock down, and I took that as a real compliment to the side."

Manchester United's quest for a 20th title doesn't start until Monday, when former Arsenal striker Robin van Persie will hope to make his debut at Everton.

Everton's neighbor, Liverpool, was on the receiving end of the biggest shock of the opening weekend, with Brendan Rodgers' new side losing 3-0 at West Bromwich Albion on Saturday.
