What Time Is It?

[unable to retrieve full-text content]

That simple question is probably asked more often today than ever. In our clock-studded society, the answer is never more than a glance away, and so we can blissfully partition our days into ever smaller increments for ever more tightly scheduled tasks, confident that we will always know it is 7:03 p.m.

Rachel Uchitel: Expecting a Girl!

Rachel Uchitel, who confirmed she's expecting with an oh-so-cute Tweet earlier this week, is having a girl. That ought to make for some interesting conversations someday when the younger Uchitel decides to Google mom.

She and husband Matt Hahn are very excited about the female bundle of joy and are already stocking up preparing for her arrival. Rache is five months along.

Rache Uchitel

It was TMZ who first scooped the sex of the baby. Don't ask us how, but those guys are never wrong. Maybe they just got ahold of the wedding registry.

Uchitel, whose affair with Tiger Woods, and before that David Boreanaz - both men were married with children at the time - put her on the map, is due in April.

Congratulations and good luck to Matt Hahn - you'll need it B!

Vigil honors victims of Texas Christmas shooting

GRAPEVINE, Texas | Wed Dec 28, 2011 11:45pm EST

GRAPEVINE, Texas (Reuters) - Six victims of a Christmas Day shooting rampage near Dallas were honored by more than 100 friends on Wednesday who wept and clung to each other as they shared their memories at a candlelit vigil.

The group gathered early in the evening at a park in this quiet suburb about a mile from the apartment complex where police said Aziz Yazdanpanah, 58, opened fire on Sunday morning and killed his estranged wife Fatemeh Rahmati, 56, and two children Nona, 19, and Ali, 14.

Toting two pistols and dressed as Santa, the gunman also shot and killed his wife's sister, Zohreh Rahmaty, 58, her husband, Mohamad Hossein Zarei, 59, and their daughter, Sahra Zarei, 22, before turning a gun on himself.

"Nona would not want harsh words said, only good things," said Allison Baum, Nona's best friend and the organizer of the event to remember the family of Iranian immigrants who had settled in the Dallas-Fort Worth area decades ago.

"This is a night of closure and a way to pay our respects," she added.

The family was beloved by the Iranian community in the Dallas area, according to long-time family friend Fran Hosseiny, who said she received a call from relatives of the victims in Iran on Wednesday morning.

"They were worried that no one was here to remember them," she said. "I told them they had so many friends and were so loved that no one will forget them."

Sahra's boyfriend, Jonathan Garcia, was among those who paid tribute at Wednesday's vigil. He was the last person to have contact with any of the victims through a text message sent by Sahra on Sunday morning.

"We were very close and had lots of plans," Garcia said of Sahra, who he said hoped to go to medical school after graduating from the University of Texas at Arlington in the spring.

"I do know she left us happy, and I have no doubt about that."

Karim Ghoghaie, who said he had known the family for more than 30 years, told Reuters that relatives from London and Los Angeles arrived on Wednesday to claim the bodies, which will be buried at a private funeral in the Dallas area on Thursday.

The massacre rocked the usually festive Dallas suburb dubbed the "Christmas Capital of Texas" and known more for its tourism, Christmas season events, festivals and vineyards than for violence.

As friends prepared to remember the victims on Wednesday, new details from the ongoing police investigation emerged.

Search warrants released in the day identified two guns recovered from the scene as a Smith & Wesson 915 model 9 mm pistol and a Glock 23 .40-caliber pistol.

Police said they found one pistol in the hand of Yazdanpanah, who shot himself in the head, and another in the hand of his brother-in-law.

"We believe Yazdanpanah put the gun in Zarei's hand to make it look like he had shot them," said Grapevine Lt. Todd Dearing. "But we know that Mohamad was a victim just like the others."

Sexual assault reports up at U.S. military academies: report (Reuters)

(Reuters) ? The U.S. Department of Defense said on Tuesday that there was a rise in reports of sexual assault at the nation's military academies in the most recent school year and announced new policies to help victims.

The "Annual Report on Sexual Harassment and Violence at Military Service Academies" found that during the 2010-11 year there were 65 reports of sexual assaults involving cadets and midshipmen, up from 41 in the prior year.

To help address the jump, the academies are implementing two new policies.

Service members who have been victims of sexual assault will now be able to request an expedited transfer from their units. The military will now also retain records of sexual assaults longer -- in some cases as long as 50 years.

"We know that the military academies are similar to college campuses around the country in that sexual harassment and assault are challenges that all faculty, staff and students need to work to prevent," said Major General Mary Kay Hertog, director of the Sexual Assault Prevention and Response Office.

"However, when it does occur, we owe it to those who have been victimized, and to every cadet and midshipman, to do everything possible to provide needed support and to hold those who commit sexual assault appropriately accountable."

As part of the review process, Department of Defense officials visited the U.S. Military Academy, Naval Academy and Air Force Academy and reviewed academy policies and procedures. They also held focus groups.

Officials found most academy programs fulfilled or in some cases surpassed existing policies and directives, but Hertog said they have also identified areas for improvement.

Miami will win the 2012 NBA Season

It?s Showtime! After a 149-day lockout when the NBA season was expected to vanish, it?s back. Yes. It?s Christmas ? the most joyous time of the year! What a day to start playing ball. What?s in store for 2012?

?Heat will definitely win the East,? proclaimed Gerald Anthony ?Samsam? Gullas, the team manager of the University of Visayas Green Lancers. ?And, with his improved post game, the runaway choice for MVP is LeBron James.?

For a diehard Kobe Bryant fan, Samsam?s prediction is all-confident. ?LeBron will shine in the biggest stage and earn his first ring against anyone who comes out of the West. He will now be called Mr. Dollar because he has now 4 quarters. Last year, 3 quarters and 75 cents ra. Haha!?

In the Dec. 25 game between the Heat and the reigning champs, Mavericks, Mr. Gullas was proven right: LeBron scored 37 points. In a game that had Miami leading Dallas by 15 after the 1st quarter, 21 at halftime and 35 in the 3rd quarter, Miami won the Christmas contest. (One play ? it?s on YouTube ? was spectacular: LeBron tossing an alley-hoop pass to Dwyane Wade for a slam.)

This NBA season will be electrifying. In a Sean Gregory article entitled, ?Welcome Back, Basketball: Five NBA Stories To Watch,? a league executive, Tony Ronzone, was interviewed. Here are the five stories?

ONE, the shortened 66-game season. Instead of the usual 82 games, every single ballgame is important. ??It reminds me a little of Europe, where every game, you can?t lose,? says Ronzone. ?Lose two games, and getting to the playoffs becomes that much harder.? The schedule also included a multitude of back-to-back games for teams: the Lakers, for example, play four games in the first five days of the season. Weary legs mean more playing time for guys you?ve never heard of.?

TWO: Chris Paul joining Blake Griffin in Los Angeles. In the NBA Finals, it might be Miami vs. LA. But, no, it?s not the Lakers ? but the Clippers. ?Expectations for the morbid franchise are higher than ever,? wrote Sean Gregory. ??Showtime just went from purple and gold? ? the Lakers ? ?to red and white,? says Ronzone.?

THREE, the Heat from Miami. Like Samsam, Mr. Ronzone believes Miami will win. ??They will definitely be better,? says Ronzone. ?It will help that the media attention won?t be on them from day 1, like last year.? In a season with a tiring schedule, the young and hungry will survive. LeBron James, Dwyane Wade, and Chris Bosh are veteran players, but only Wade is pushing 30 (he turns 30 on Jan. 12).?

FOUR: ?Spur of the Moment,? wrote Gregory. We seem to forget that the San Antonio Spurs, beaten in the first round by the 8th seeds, Memphis Grizzlies, finished with the best regular season record in the West, 61-21.

?You get the sense this is the last year for the Spurs to muster something,? says Ronzone. ?They seem to be saying, ?OK, let?s give it all we can.??

Tim Duncan is 35. Manu Ginobili will turn 35 this summer. Will this be their last hurrah? ?A condensed schedule could hurt older teams ? their legs tire out more than others,? wrote Gregory. ?However, the shortened training camp may favor teams with an established chemistry, like San Antonio. And remember: in 1999, the last lockout-shortened season, the Spurs won it all.?

Samsam Gullas comments: ?Whomever wins the West solely depends on how good the Clippers are or how improved the Thunder are.?

FIVE, watch for Ricky Rubio. This Spanish star is the rookie to watch. Only 21, he was the fifth overall pick in 2009. He postponed his jump from Espa?a to Estados Unidos but now he?s with the Minnesota Timberwolves. (His resume includes being the youngest ever to play in the Spanish ACB League ? at 14 years old.)

?He?s the kind of player you?re going to want to watch,? says Ronzone. ?Players want to play with him. He makes guys around him better. He has that soccer mentality, where the assist is just as important as scoring the goal.?

Imagine a soccer-loving Spaniard wearing hi-cut sneakers?

This Christmas, here?s one more reason to celebrate: The NBA is back.

Seven hurt as bomb hits Arabic school in Nigeria (Reuters)

PORT HARCOURT (Reuters) ? Assailants threw a crude homemade bomb into an Arabic school in southern Nigeria's Delta state overnight, police said, wounding seven people and escalating tensions between Muslims and Christians after a spate of church bombings across the nation.

Six of the wounded were children younger than nine.

The attack around 10 p.m. on Tuesday came two days after Christmas Day bombings of churches and other targets by Islamist militant group Boko Haram claimed around 32 lives in a coordinated strike which seemed aimed at igniting sectarian strife.

"Some men driving in a Camry car threw a low capacity explosive into a building where an Arabic class was taking place," police spokesman Charles Muka said.

"Children aged between four and nine were taking a lesson. Six children were injured and one adult," he said.

He said police suspected a local vigilante group.

Boko Haram, a sect which aims to impose Islamic sharia law across Nigeria, claimed responsibility for the blasts, the second Christmas in a row it has caused carnage.

The worst attack killed at least 27 people in the St Theresa Catholic church in Madalla, a town on the edge of the capital Abuja, and devastated surrounding buildings and cars as worshippers poured out of the church after Christmas mass.

Analysts say the attacks risk reviving sectarian violence between the mostly Muslim north and Christian south, which has claimed thousands of lives in the past decade.

Northern Nigerian Christians fear the Christmas Day bombings could lead to a religious war in Africa's most populous country.

Separately, a family of four was killed in a machete attack on Wednesday in Nigeria's ethnically and religiously mixed Plateau state -- on the threshold of the country's largely Muslim north and its mostly Christian south.

There was no suggestion the killings had any link to Sunday's church bombings, as the victims were Christians.

Plateau is a tinderbox of ethnic and religious rivalries over land and power between local people and migrants from other areas.

These often take the form of sectarian strife between the state's Christian and Muslim communities, and it is thought likely to be the first place to blow up should a wider conflict start.

Gomez reveals sister's name was Scarlett Teefey

We're happy to report Selena Gomez and her family are doing OK.

The pop star and former Disney princess has broken her silence since tragedy struck when her mom recently suffered a miscarriage.

"Belated Merry Christmas everybody," Gomez tweeted and posted on Facebook this afternoon. "I can't thank you enough for all of your thoughts and prayers. I love you all so much and we hope you and your family had a beautiful Christmas!"

She not only signed the message from herself, but also included her mom, her stepdad and "our guardian angel Scarlett."

Gomez announced on Twitter late last month that mom Mandy and stepfather Brian Teefey were expecting their first child together. Sadly, Mandy miscarried mere weeks later.

Gomez subsequently pulled out of two radio station holiday shows to be with her family. She is expected to perform in Times Square during MTV's live New Year's Eve special.

Nigerian blasts mar pope's Christmas peace appeal (AP)

VATICAN CITY ? Pope Benedict XVI issued pleas for peace to reign across the world during his traditional Christmas address Sunday, a call marred by Muslim extremists who bombed a Catholic church in Nigeria, striking after worshippers celebrated Mass.

The assault on the Catholic church left 35 dead in Madalla, near the Nigerian capital. A failed bombing also occurred near a church in the city of Jos, followed by a shooting that killed a police officer. The blast came a year after a series of Christmas Eve bombs in Jos claimed by Islamist militants killed 32.

Benedict didn't refer explicitly to the Nigerian bombings in his "Urbi et Orbi" speech, Latin for "to the city and to the world" in which he raises alarm about world hotspots. But in a statement, the Vatican called the attacks a sign of "cruelty and absurd, blind hatred" that shows no respect for human life.

Elsewhere, Christmas was celebrated with the typical joy of the season: In Cuba, Catholics had plenty to cheer as they prepared for Benedict's March arrival, the first visit by a pontiff to the Communist-run island since John Paul II's historic tour nearly 14 years ago.

"We have faith in God that we will be allowed to have this treat," said Rogelio Montes de Oca, 72, as he stood outside the Cathedral in Old Havana. "Not every country will have the chance to see him physically and receive his blessing."

And in the Holy Land, pilgrims and locals alike flocked to Jesus' traditional birthplace in numbers not seen since before the Palestinian uprising over a decade ago, despite lashing rains and wind.

"We wanted to be part of the action," said Don Moore, 41, a psychology professor from Berkeley, California, who came to Bethlehem with his family. "This is the place, this is where it all started. It doesn't get any more special than that."

The holy town of Bethlehem is no stranger to violence. Like the rest of the West Bank, it fell on hard times after the Palestinian uprising against Israeli occupation broke out in late 2000.

But as the violence has subsided, tourists have returned in large numbers. On Saturday, turnout for Christmas Eve festivities in Bethlehem was at its highest since the uprising began driving tourists away. An estimated 100,000 visitors streamed into Manger Square on Christmas Eve, up from 70,000 the previous year, according to the Israeli military's count.

The Holy Land and the entire Mideast were very much on Benedict's mind as he delivered his Christmas speech from the the sun-drenched loggia of St. Peter's Basilica. The 84-year-old pontiff appeared in fine form, just hours after celebrating a two-hour long Christmas Eve Mass that ended around midnight.

"May the Lord come to the aid of our world torn by so many conflicts which even today stain the earth with blood," Benedict said.

He said he hoped that the birth of Jesus, which Christmas celebrates, would send a message to all who need to be saved from hardships: that Israelis and the Palestinians would resume peace talks and that there would be an "end to the violence in Syria, where so much blood has already been shed."

He called for international assistance for refugees from the Horn of Africa and flood victims in Thailand, among others, and urged greater political dialogue in Myanmar, and stability in Iraq, Afghanistan and Africa's Great Lakes region, which includes Congo, Uganda and Rwanda.

After his speech, Benedict delivered Christmas greetings in 65 different languages, from Mongolian to Maori, Aramaic to Albanian, Tamil to Thai. He finished the list with Guarani and Latin, as the bells tolled from St. Peter's enormous bell towers.

In the piazza below, thousands of jubilant tourists and pilgrims, and hundreds of colorful Swiss Guards and Italian military bands mingled around the Vatican's giant Christmas tree and larger-than-life sized nativity scene.

In the U.K., the leader of the world's Anglicans, the Archbishop of Canterbury, said the summer riots in Britain and the financial crisis had abused trust in British society.

In his Christmas Day sermon, Rowan Williams appealed to those congregated at Canterbury Cathedral to learn lessons about "mutual obligation" from the events of the past year. He said Sunday that "the most pressing question" now facing Britain is "who and where we are as a society."

"Bonds have been broken, trust abused and lost," he said.

Britain's royal family, meanwhile, celebrated Christmas with one notable absence. Queen Elizabeth II's husband Prince Philip remained hospitalized after having a coronary stent put in after doctors determined the heart pains that sent him to the hospital on Friday were caused by a blocked artery.

Elizabeth's annual Christmas message dealt with the theme of family. The message was recorded Dec. 9, before Philip went into the hospital.

Wearing a festive red dress, the Queen said that the importance of family was driven home by the marriages of two of her grandchildren this year. Elizabeth spoke of the strength family can provide during times of hardship and how friendships are often formed in difficult times.

She pointed to the Commonwealth nations as an example that family "does not necessarily mean blood relatives but often a description of a community."

And in the United States, members of the loose-knit hacking movement known as "Anonymous" claimed to have stolen a raft of e-mails and credit card data from U.S. security think tank Stratfor, promising a weeklong Christmas-inspired assault on targets including the U.S. Army, the U.S. Air Force, Goldman Sachs and MF Global.

The group has previously claimed responsibility for attacks on companies such as Visa, MasterCard and PayPal, as well as others in the music industry and the Church of Scientology.

Giants pound Jets

Bradshaw's strong running powers Big Blue; Week 17 vs. Dallas will decide NFC East

By DENNIS WASZAK Jr.

updated 7:27 p.m. ET Dec. 24, 2011

EAST RUTHERFORD, N.J. - Rex Ryan was brash and confident all week, insisting his Jets were the kings of New York.

Well, the Giants shut him up in a big way ? taking the city bragging rights and setting up an even more important showdown with the Dallas Cowboys next weekend with a 29-14 victory Saturday.

"I hate to use that cliche, but this is a huge one," left tackle David Diehl said. "This is about the city, the city of New York and what team wants to be responsible. They have talked all week and said what they wanted to say. From Day 1, they're our big brother and other stuff. We went out there and played our game and showed whose stadium this is."

Ryan said the Jets were the better team the last two years, based on their consecutive trips to the AFC championship game and the Giants missing the postseason. Tom Coughlin responded by saying, "Talk is cheap. Play the game."

It was the Giants who did.

"They were the better team today, and they're the better team this year," a humbled Ryan said. "Clearly, I was wrong."

The Giants kept their postseason hopes alive, helped by Victor Cruz setting two franchise receiving records and Ahmad Bradshaw running for two touchdowns. While neither team looked much like playoff material, the Giants (8-7) are now in position to win the NFC East with a victory at home next Sunday against Dallas.

"Given everything that was at stake, and all the noise that has been coming out of Florham Park," Giants co-owner John Mara said, "yeah, it means a little more."

Running back Brandon Jacobs said he had an exchange with Ryan after the game in which the coach approached him, used an expletive and said, "Wait till we win the Super Bowl."

Added Jacobs: "And I told him I'll punch him in the face. I told him out of all these Giants players on this team you're talking to the wrong one. And that was that."

Ryan acknowledged that he and Jacobs "had a private conversation. He doesn't like me; I respect him."

The back-and-forth went on even in the hours before the game, when Jacobs and kicker Lawrence Tynes both removed black curtains placed by the Jets over the Giants' Super Bowl logos. The Jets said it was simply their standard practice to cover those logos for every one of the team's home games, regardless of opponent, because it is the players' entrance.

??Some of the best photos from this week in the NFL.

"We knew early what we were going to get no matter what happened as soon as he had the opportunity to run his big fat mouth," Jacobs said of Ryan's boasts throughout the week.

Meanwhile, the Jets' playoff hopes took a devastating hit, and at 8-7 they'll need to win at Miami next week and get major help from several other teams. They have to hope for Cincinnati and Tennessee to lose, and have either Oakland or Denver lose.

"I mean, we don't deserve to control our own destiny," Jets linebacker Bart Scott said. "We haven't played good enough football to do that. We need to try to finish strong, but if you don't make it to the playoffs, you've got nobody to blame but yourself."

Cruz, who had three catches for 164 yards, broke Amani Toomer's single-season mark for yards receiving ? and the team's record for longest touchdown reception, a 99-yarder that gave the Giants the lead for good in the second quarter.

"It's just amazing," Cruz said, "and to beat the Jets in the process is added incentive."

It was a brutal game at times, with both offenses sluggish and prone to mistakes. The Jets were also penalized 10 times, including a late hit call on Aaron Maybin, who plowed into D.J. Ware in the fourth quarter ? a play on which Coughlin was injured out of bounds. The Giants coach needed to be checked out on the bench briefly before limping back to the sideline.

"Never better," a smiling Coughlin said when asked how he was feeling.

Eli Manning finished just 9 of 27 for 225 yards. Mark Sanchez completed 30 passes on a career-high 59 attempts but put up only 258 yards and was intercepted twice. The Jets were also a brutal 4 for 21 on third-down conversions.

"I left a lot of completions out there," Sanchez said.

The sloppiest stretch came midway through the fourth quarter with wild swings of momentum.

The Giants thought they had stopped the Jets on fourth down, but a pass interference call gave them new life. Plaxico Burress ? playing against the Giants in the regular season for the first time since they cut him in 2009 and he served a 20-month prison sentence on a gun charge ? thought he had scored a touchdown, but offensive pass interference called it back. The Giants thought they'd recovered a fumble by Sanchez, but officials reversed the call on a challenge, saying his arm was going forward.

The Giants got their turnover moments later, though, when Sanchez fumbled the snap in the end zone.

The Jets weren't done. David Harris intercepted Manning's pass that tipped off Hakeem Nicks' hands, and the Jets had another apparent fumble by Sanchez reversed on review.

On third-and-12 from the 13, Sanchez scrambled for 11 yards ? and Antrel Rolle was called for holding, putting the ball at the 1. Sanchez dived into the end zone, making it 20-14 with 7:17 left.

But the Jets wouldn't get any closer. Chris Canty sacked Sanchez for a safety, and after an onside free kick by the Jets was recovered by the Giants, Bradshaw had a 19-yard TD run with 2:04 left.

"It's real sad right now," Jets cornerback Darrelle Revis said. "We needed this win. We made some mistakes and they outplayed us."

Cruz's 99-yard catch ? the longest scoring pass in team history ? came with the Giants in dire straits facing third-and-10 from the 1. Manning, standing in the back of the end zone, zipped a pass to Cruz, who dodged tackle attempts by Antonio Cromartie and Kyle Wilson and took off down the right sideline. Eric Smith was the only one with a chance to get him, but Cruz outran him to give the Giants a 10-7 lead with 2:12 left in the opening half.

It was also the longest offensive play against the Jets in team history.

Now the Jets will prepare for the Dolphins ? and keep their fingers crossed.

"If the gates open," wide receiver Santonio Holmes said, "we're going to walk right through them."

Notes: DE Jason Pierre-Paul had two of the Giants' five sacks, giving him 15? this season. ... Jets S Brodney Pool said he experienced migraine symptoms during the game, worsened after a hard hit in the third quarter when Bradshaw slammed into him. He said he was fine. ... Jets LB Garrett McIntyre hurt his knee covering the opening kickoff, and there was no immediate word on the injury.

10 Most Popular Google Doodles of 2011

doodles

With today's musical holiday doodle, Google is wrapping up 2011 with almost 50 U.S. homepage doodles. The search giant has honored musicians, actors, scientists, authors, astronauts, and more this year?some with elaborate, interactive imagery and others with simple drawings.

The doodles have proven so popular that Google recently opened up on online store via Zazzle.com that sells merchandise adorned with the doodle of your choice. Pick up a mug featuring Yuri Gagarin, the first man in space. How about a tote bag with the doodle for photography pioneer Louis Daguerre? Or a t-shirt celebrating Google's 13th birthday? Pick a logo and Google will afix it to the product of your choice?from $11 for a mug to $48 for a custom skateboard.

But what's the best doodle of them all? In addition to the various U.S. doodles, Google has also created homepage masterpieces for celebs, public figures, and holidays around the world. But here in the U.S., there were at least 10 that caught our eye, and those of our readers. Many of the most popular doodles this year included an interactive component, like the videos for Charlie Chaplin and Queen frontman Freddie Mercury. Childhood cartoons also featured prominently, like those from Roger Hargreaves and Richard Scarry to Jim Henson and Gumby creator Art Clokey.

We also tapped our inner dancer for a Martha Graham-themed doodle and cracked up once again in honor of Lucille Ball's 100th birthday. Not to be outdone, we also explored the oceans with Jules Verne and created our own mini masterpieces thanks to Les Paul.

Check out the slideshow below for a look back at some of our favorite Google doodles from 2011, and let us know your favorites in the comments below.

SC voter ID law rejected by Justice Department

(AP) ? The Justice Department on Friday rejected South Carolina's law requiring voters to show photo identification at the polls, saying it makes it harder for minorities to cast ballots. It was the first voter ID law to be refused by the federal agency in nearly 20 years.

The Obama administration said South Carolina's law didn't meet the burden under the 1965 Voting Rights Act, which outlawed discriminatory practices preventing blacks from voting. Tens of thousands of minorities in South Carolina might not be able to cast ballots under South Carolina's law because they don't have the right photo ID, Assistant Attorney General Thomas Perez said.

South Carolina's law was passed by a Republican-controlled Legislature and signed by GOP Gov. Nikki Haley. The state's attorney general vowed to fight the federal agency in court.

"Nothing in this act stops people from voting," said Attorney General Alan Wilson, who is also a Republican.

South Carolina's new voter ID law requires voters to show poll workers a state-issued driver's license or several other alternative forms of photo identification.

"The U.S. Department of Justice today blocked implementation of a new law that would require South Carolina voters to present a photo ID in order to vote," the state Election Commission said in a statement late Friday. "Therefore, ID requirements for voting will not change at this time.'

South Carolina is among five states that passed laws this year requiring some form of ID at the polls, while such laws were already on the books in Indiana and Georgia, whose law received approval from President George W. Bush's Justice Department. Indiana's law, passed in 2005, was upheld by the U.S. Supreme Court in 2008.

Those new laws also allow voters without the required photo ID to cast provisional ballots, but the voters must return to a specific location with that ID within a certain time limit for their ballots to count.

Most of the laws have been promoted and approved by Republicans, who argue they are needed to avert voter fraud. Democrats say the measures are actually aimed at reducing minority votes for their candidates.

The Justice Department must approve changes to South Carolina's election laws under the federal Voting Rights Act because of the state's past failure to protect the voting rights of blacks. It is one of nine states that require the agency's approval.

The last time the Justice Department rejected a voter ID law was in 1994 when Louisiana passed a measure requiring a picture ID. After changes were made, it was approved by the agency.

Justice officials are reviewing Texas' new law. Kansas, Tennessee and Wisconsin also passed laws this year, but they are not under the agency's review.

South Carolina's law also required the state to determine how many voters lack state-issued IDs so that the Election Commission can work to make sure they know of law changes. The Department of Motor Vehicles will issue free state photo identification cards to those voters.

"Minority registered voters were nearly 20 percent more likely to lack DMV-issued ID than white registered voters, and thus to be effectively disenfranchised," Perez wrote, noting that the numbers could be even higher since the data submitted by the state doesn't include inactive voters.

The number of active and inactive voters that should be used to determine how many people would be affected by the law has been in dispute. Department of Motor Vehicles executive director Kevin Shwedo said the state Election Commission knew it was using inaccurate data when it released reports showing nearly 240,000 active and inactive voters lacked driver's licenses or ID cards.

Shwedo sent the state's attorney general an analysis showing that 207,000 of those voters live in other states, allowed their ID cards to expire, probably have licenses with names that didn't match voter records or were dead. He said the commission created "artificially high numbers to excite the masses."

Earlier in the week, commission officials said the agency will eliminate nearly 60,000 deceased people and individuals whose names didn't match DMV records.

Haley said the decision was more proof President Barack Obama is fighting conservative ideas like voter ID laws or immigration reform.

"The president and his bullish administration are fighting us every step of the way. It is outrageous, and we plan to look at every possible option to get this terrible, clearly political decision overturned so we can protect the integrity of our electoral process and our 10th amendment rights," Haley said in a statement.

South Carolina ACLU executive director Victoria Middleton applauded the Justice Department's decision, saying the "misguided" law represented "a dramatic setback to voting rights in our state and we are pleased to see it stopped in its tracks."

The decision also was welcomed by civil rights activist Jesse Jackson, who planned to talk about how voter ID laws are an effort by conservatives to keep blacks from voting in his hometown of Greenville, S.C., next week. He said the laws are like modern day poll taxes, targeting elderly people that can't afford to get IDs and students.

"We're fighting wars for democracy overseas and we're fighting democracy at home," Jackson said. "What a contradiction."

Facebook's most popular games list topped by Playdom (which isn't Zynga)

You'll excuse our baffled aghast, but we just saw Facebook's most played games of 2011 list and were mesmerized by this list of stuff we've never heard of. Also, we're surprised that Disney-owned Playdom sits at the top of the list with Gardens of Time, while Zynga's myriad "Ville" offerings, "... with Friends" games, Empires & Allies, and Adventure World are instead scattered throughout the bottom nine.

EA's The Sims Social edges out Zynga as well for the number two spot, though neither Playdom nor EA can compare to Zynga's four entires on the top 10. According to Facebook, the list is put together by "looking at the top games on Facebook with more than 100,000 monthly active users and giving priority to those games with the highest user satisfaction scores."

Presumed victim of serial killer alive and well

By NBC News and news services

CHICAGO - A man?feared to have been murdered?by a serial killer has been found alive after more than three decades, officials said Wednesday.

Theodore Szal disappeared from the Chicago area in 1977 when he was 24, according to the Cook County Sheriff's office in Illinois. His race, age and the date he vanished bore similarities to the 33 victims of serial killer John Wayne Gacy, eight of whom were never identified, leading his family to believe he was dead.

On Wednesday, Cook County Sheriff Tom Dart announced?Szal, 59,?was found living in Beaverton, Ore.

?I believe Christmas has come early for the Szal family,? said Dart in a statement. ?Being able to tell an 88-year-old father that his son, whose picture he has been carrying around for 34 years in his breast pocket, has been found alive is something special.?

Szal had decided to leave Illinois when he was 24, Dart said. He was going through a divorce, and wasn't reported missing because he had a history of dinsengaging from his family for extended periods of time, reported NBCChicago.com. But when they didn't hear from him for years, they worried he was dead.

Szal's vehicle had been found near O'Hare airport, close to Gacy's house, according to NBCChicago.com, and he had a construction-related job at the time of his disappearance, fitting the description of the killer's victims.

AP file

This 1978 file photo shows serial killer John Wayne Gacy.

The Cook County Sheriff's detectives renewed efforts in October to identify the eight unknown Gacy victims, NBCChicago.com reported. A check of Szal's name, date of birth and social security number revealed he was alive; his family was told the good news?on Tuesday.

?While we are so relieved to have discovered that Ted is alive and well, our thoughts and prayers are also with the families of the victims ? both known and yet to be determined ? of John Wayne Gacy," Szal?s family said in a statement. "We are so thankful to Cook County Sheriff Tom Dart and Detective Jason Moran. The work they are doing is meaningful and important. With the news they were able to bring us, we do ask that our privacy be respected while we sort through the next steps with our family. Thank you."

When Szal was told his family had been searching for him, NBCChicago.com reported there was silence on the phone as a "completely surprised" Szal searched for words and said he left the area because of his divorce and a misunderstanding with the family.

This is the second time a man presumed killed by Gacy has been found alive: In late October, another former construction worker, Harold Wayne Lovell, was discovered living in Florida.

FAMU Hires PR Firm for Crisis Communications Management ...

Florida A&M today announced the hiring of a public relations firm to manage its communications strategy following the death of Marching 100 drum major Robert Champion. FAMU officials and students embrace the potential for the firm to have a positive impact on national coverage of the story.

The PR firm that FAMU hired is Dan Klores Communications. The firm has a lengthy list of clients that include some pretty big names.

DKC is based in New York. Its website lists Delta Airlines, the TV show Glee, and Yahoo among their many clients.

FAMU student Ciera Butts says, ?I think it is a good idea. But, it?s kind of sad in a way that we couldn?t stop it without getting a P.R. firm. But, I think it?s a good idea to have more help. They can say the right things and good things as they come on and look on how we progress in the hazing situation. That?ll give us positive feedback.?

Adrian Peterson plans to play vs. Saints

By JON KRAWCZYNSKI

updated 6:31 p.m. ET Dec. 15, 2011

EDEN PRAIRIE, Minn. - Spending three weeks on the sideline watching his Minnesota Vikings appears to be about all Adrian Peterson can take.

Peterson said on Thursday that he plans to play against the New Orleans Saints on Sunday despite being only about 85 percent healed from a sprained left ankle that has caused him to miss three straight games.

He wants to be there for his teammates, who have found a new way to lose seemingly every week to fall to 2-11; for his coaches, who have been receiving plenty of criticism during this massively disappointing season; and for all the fans who are counting on him to help them in their fantasy football leagues.

"It's very important, especially for my fantasy team owners," Peterson joked. "They've been giving me a hard time on Twitter. But just being out ... seeing my guys go out and fall short week after week and just wishing I was out there to help those guys compete."

Peterson suffered the high ankle sprain against the Oakland Raiders on Nov. 20. After making him the highest-paid running back in NFL history in the offseason, the Vikings didn't want to risk their investment by rushing Peterson back in a season in which the playoffs were not an option.

But Peterson never thought about taking the rest of the season off to make sure he's fully recovered.

"I love this game, so no matter if we were 2-11 or whatever, if I'm healthy I'm going to go out and play," Peterson said. "That's been my mindset from the beginning. Three weeks off, I'm going to be a part of it."

His teammates aren't the only ones eager to see him back. Peterson said fantasy owners have pestered him every week with questions on Twitter.

"Should we play you this week? Please!" Peterson said with a chuckle. "Some of the stuff I read on there is crazy."

Quarterback Christian Ponder's hip pointer has improved as well, so coach Leslie Frazier said the Vikings are expecting to have everyone available for the game against the Saints (10-3). Peterson will be evaluated again on Friday, but all signs are pointing to him returning to the field.

"The way he's moving around, some of the things that really concerned him a week ago at this time don't seem to concern him much, nor does it concern us," Frazier said. "So if he has another good day (Friday), we should be in the clear."

Frazier said the fact that Peterson still wants to play even though there is nothing left for the team to play for speaks volumes.

"A superstar like him, he's going to achieve what he wants to achieve," Frazier said. "The fact that he wants to get back and play with this football team speaks very highly of who he is as a person. He wants to finish this season with his teammates."

Peterson said he still feels some soreness when he cuts and plants, but not enough to prevent him from wanting to play.

"I'm like 85 percent," he said. "But I'll be able to take the pain and whatever it is that comes with it."
